What Is GSM in T-Shirts and Why It Matters for Streetwear

Two black oversized tees, same photo angle, same size chart, same boxy cut on the model. One is ₹499 and one is ₹1,999. On a phone screen you genuinely cannot tell them apart, which is exactly the point. The difference is mostly GSM in t-shirts, and almost nobody selling to Indian buyers prints that number on the product page.

That silence is the whole business model for cheap tees. If the weight isn't listed you can't compare, so you compare on price and print instead and find out what you bought four washes later. Here's what each range feels like, and how to check it yourself when a brand won't tell you. What is GSM fabric, exactly?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. Take one square metre of the fabric, put it on a scale, and the reading in grams is the GSM. A 240 GSM cotton jersey means a square metre of that cloth weighs 240 grams. That's it.

Two things it isn't. It isn't thread count, a woven-fabric measure borrowed by bedsheet ads that doesn't really apply to knitted jersey. And it isn't a quality score by itself: a loosely knitted 240 GSM cotton can pill and twist worse than a well-made 180. GSM tells you the mass of fabric you're getting; the fibre, the knit and the finishing decide how that mass behaves. Weight is the first filter, not the verdict.

The GSM ladder: what each weight feels like in real life

These ranges are industry-typical rather than official standards, and mills draw the lines slightly differently. Learn roughly where the rungs sit and you can price a tee in your head before you touch it.

  • Around 140–160 GSM. Thin. Promotional tees, college fest merch, the ₹299 rack. Breathable, which is the one honest thing in its favour. But hold a white one to a window and you'll see your hand through it, and a couple of months in, the body goes shapeless.
  • Around 180 GSM. The sensible everyday middle. Enough body that it doesn't cling, light enough for an Indian summer afternoon. For a regular-fit tee you wear to class four days a week, this is a perfectly good answer.
  • Around 220–240 GSM. Heavyweight, where streetwear actually lives. Opaque even in white, substantial in the hand. It hangs off the shoulder in a column instead of collapsing onto your chest, and prints sit flat rather than rippling.
  • Around 300–340 GSM. Hoodie and sweatshirt territory. Real structure, holds a shape on the back of a chair, blocks a north Indian winter evening. Below roughly 280 a hoodie starts feeling like a thick t-shirt with a hood stapled on.

Why GSM matters most for oversized t-shirts

Here's the insight the rest of this is built on. An oversized cut has far more fabric hanging off your frame with nothing underneath to support it. A slim tee is held up by your chest, shoulders and ribs. An oversized one is deliberately not; there's air between you and most of the garment.

Light fabric can't survive that. With nothing holding it out, thin jersey falls in and wraps around you, and the box you paid for becomes a shirt that's just too big. That's the difference between a tee that looks intentional and one that looks borrowed from an older cousin. Weight is what makes an oversized silhouette hold its box, so cut and fabric are one conversation, not two. The honest counterpoint: heavier isn't automatically better in 38°C

Any brand selling heavyweight tees has an obvious incentive to tell you heavier is always better. It isn't. More cotton per square metre means more insulation and slower drying, and at 38°C with humidity sitting on you, that's a real cost. Stand in a queue at noon in May and a 240 GSM tee will make itself known.

What decides comfort is weight plus fibre plus knit, together. A 240 GSM combed cotton with an open knit can be more wearable in heat than a 170 GSM polyester blend that traps everything against your skin. Terry cotton, the loop-back knit on a lot of heavyweight tees and hoodies, carries its weight in loops rather than dense flat cloth, so it feels substantial without feeling sealed.

Practical version: heavyweight for evenings, winter, air conditioning and anywhere the silhouette is the point. Mid-weight around 180 for peak summer daytime and long commutes. Own both, and stop pretending one tee covers a year in India.

How to judge GSM without a label

Most product pages won't tell you. In a store, or when a parcel lands, you can get within a range in ten seconds.

  1. Hold it up to light. A window, a tube light, your phone torch behind it. If you can read the shape of your hand through a single layer, you're in lightweight territory. A heavyweight tee blocks light almost completely.
  2. Stretch the hem and let go. Pull ten centimetres of the bottom hem sideways, then release. Heavy jersey snaps back close to where it started. Thin fabric stays wavy, which is what your neckline will look like in a month.
  3. Bunch a handful and open your fist. Heavier cotton pushes back and falls open by itself. Light fabric stays crumpled in a sad little ball.
  4. Check the shoulder. Hold the garment up and let it hang. Does the shoulder keep a defined line, or does the panel fold inward? On an oversized tee, that fold is your preview of how it sits on you.
  5. Look at it on the hanger from the side. Heavy fabric hangs in long straight vertical falls. Light fabric clings and shows every crease.

One more, if you've got the tag: heavier tees usually carry more specific care instructions, because a brand that spent money on fabric wants you to keep it. What weight to buy for what you're actually doing

  • Daily college wear, April to June. Mid-weight, roughly 180, in a breathable cotton. You're in it eight hours and sweating in it. Structure isn't the priority.
  • Fit photos, going out, anything where the silhouette is the point. 220–240, no substitute. A light tee will not hold a box no matter how well it's cut.
  • Layering under a jacket or overshirt. Mid-weight, so you don't get a bulky mess at the armhole.

  • Something you'll still own in two years. Heavier, every time. Heavy cotton has more material to lose before it goes transparent, and it survives repeat washing better.

Mistakes people make with GSM

  • Shopping on price alone and calling it a bargain. Three ₹499 tees that go shapeless by August cost more than one ₹1,999 tee you're still wearing next year.
  • Assuming thick automatically means hot. It's a factor, not a rule. Knit and fibre matter alongside weight, and a well-made heavyweight terry cotton breathes better than plenty of thin synthetic blends.
  • Ignoring weight on light colours. This is where thin fabric embarrasses you. White, beige and pale blue at 150 GSM go see-through in daylight, and no print design fixes it.
  • Treating a high number as proof of quality. Heavy badly-made cotton is still badly made. Check the stitching, the collar rib and the fibre content too.
